The Motley Fool
Update - We're continuing to work with vendors regarding these errors. Unfortunately, there are quite a few potential problem points without easy indicators of who's at fault.

Update - We have identified a likely possibility for why it is occurring and are waiting on feedback from vendors. In the meantime, we have changed which parts of the site will route through the new vendor to help rule out possibilities.

boards.fool.com & www.fool.com will now route only through one of the new vendors instead of both.

Investigating - We are in the process of investigating why the "503 backend read errors" are occurring across many fool.com sites. Logs indicate that any sites flowing through the new CDN vendor are being affected, so we've got a lot of information to sift through. We recently replaced a vendor with two new ones and that introduced this problem. Support efforts have been engaged on both sides to figure out where it is occurring and what we need to change to prevent it when it is inappropriate (i.e. most of the time, this should not be occurring). We will also be putting a better error page in place (instead of the "guru meditation" page) in the future, but that is a lower priority than actually fixing it now. We can only ask for patience while we find the answer and fix it, as the highly random nature of the error is making exact cause hard to pinpoint.

Resolved - Over-eager caching has been handled, but we're still on the case for 503s
Sep 14, 15:24 EDT
Identified - We have identified a case of over-eager caching as we are transitioning to a new vendor. While we investigate the issue, we have resolved it at least temporarily by clearing this cache and observing the issue disappearing.
